We commissioned the University of the West of England and Bristol Speech & Language Therapy Research Unit to undertake a research project focussed on exploring the involvement of children and young people with speech, language and communication needs and their families in decision making.
The research team worked directly with children and young people with SLCN to get their perspectives on their involvement in decisions about their support within the context of the reformed SEND system. The research also included interviews and surveys with parents of children and young people with SLCN.
The research provides evidence for and reinforces some key principles in terms of effective involvement of children and young people with SLCN from their own perspective. It is also includes insights from parents of children with SLCN about their experiences and perspectives on involvement.
