Aims, Mission and Values

Our vision is a world where all children have the communication skills they need to fulfil their potential.

Our mission is that no child is left out or left behind due to a difficulty speaking or understanding.

Our objectives

  • Supporting children and young people’s speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) to ensure they get the help they need.
  • Bring about change to the services available to children with SLCN
  • Focus on building strong partnerships and collaboration
  • Continue to build a high performing, efficient and agile organisation

Our values are at the centre of everything that I CAN does. They give us our direction and our purpose.

We are here to help children. We work directly with them, and with those that care for them, and include children and young people in our decision making.

Communication is our passion and improving communication is at the heart of everything that we do. Because good communication is always two-way, we listen and respond clearly to children, their families and those who work with us.

We strive for excellence in everything we do by using evidence, expertise and experience. We use our resources effectively to make the greatest impact; evaluating this impact is central to our work.
Innovative. We aim to change things for the better and are constantly developing and evaluating new and effective approaches to support children and their families.

We value the contribution of others. By working together, we can make a greater impact on more children's lives.

We share information about our plans and progress so that we are accountable for everything we do. Equality of opportunity is central to what we do.

Evidence is a fundamental part of I CAN’s work.

It’s vital that our mission to help children develop speech, language and communications skills is based on evidence of what works.

So we draw on a vast academic research base from across the UK and the world to develop our programmes, interventions, projects and support.
